Our History
Established in Tallahassee, Florida in 1974, MGT of America, Inc. (MGT), has enjoyed a long and distinguished history. The individuals who started MGT came from the public sector, and were acutely aware of the challenges within that environment.
The firm, which now boasts regional offices across the country and a track record in 49 of the 50 states and several foreign countries, began when a handful of individuals decided to create a consulting firm that served the public sector; a firm that would help public sector clients operate more efficiently and effectively.

The consulting practice experienced substantial growth early when it began providing services in the health care field. In 1979, MGT assisted in the development of a health maintenance organization (HMO) that eventually was named Capital Health Plan (CHP). Today, CHP is consistently in the nation's top 10 ranked HMOs for customer satisfaction, and generates revenues over $200 million annually. Dr. Ken Boutwell, one of MGT's founding members and current CEO, was one of the founding members of CHP and currently serves on its Board of Directors.
From a 500 square foot office, MGT began serving clients, including the National Institute of Education as well as the Southern Baptist Convention. In the early years, MGT branched out from the consulting field, acquiring other businesses to assist in managing the growth of the consulting operation. Within two years, the founding members moved from their first home to a 2,000 square foot office.
Between 1981 and 2005, MGT opened regional offices in Austin, Texas; Sacramento, California; and Olympia, Washington. With 22 employees in 1979 and approximately 145 currently, MGT has completed more than 3,500 client engagements to date.
